Kulia I Ka Nu'u.

Strive for the highest.

The Vision of Philadelphia Outrigger Canoe Club
is to Promote and Encourage
the sport of Hawaiian Outrigger Canoeing.

This Mission will be accomplished by fostering in Adults and Youth,                                                   the qualities of Excellence, Sportsmanship, Community,                                                                 Conservation and Appreciation of the Environment,                                                                         from the waters of Philadelphia to the coastline of New Jersey.

Outrigger canoe paddling is a sport with roots in ancient Hawaiian culture. When King Kamehameha I united the Hawaiian Islands, outrigger canoe was the only mode of transport within the island chain. Today, outrigger canoe paddling is a popular sport, especially in Hawaii, but also all over the United States and around the world.

The East Coast Outrigger Racing Association (ECORA) represents outrigger clubs from Maine to Florida. These clubs sponsor and participate in numerous races throughout the summer. Clubs are also invited to participate in races hosted by other outrigger associations in California, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest.

The Philadelphia Outrigger Canoe Club has been paddling in local and regional waterways since 1995. Our canoes are among the first outriggers ever on the East Coast. The 2003 season marked our first effort to register with the IRS as a non-profit organization. We have completed the process towards 501.3(c) status.

Philadelphia Outrigger currently owns two outrigger canoes. Our team consists of approximately three dozen paddlers, who range from first-time novices to world class athletes, including members of the USA National Dragon Boat Team. While our skills vary, we share both a passion and a respect for this unique water sport. Our team motto, Kulia I Ka Nu'u, is to strive for the highest.

Our specific goals for our 2009 season continue to be:
  • Supporting Delaware River access in the City of Philadelphia
  • Increasing our visibility in Philadelphia and surrounding areas
  • Recruiting new members
  • Further development of our competitive women's team
As a team, we embrace Hawaiian culture and value community. For the 2009 season, we hope to recruit more paddlers so that we may share an ancient tradition with as many members of the community as possible and keep it alive on the East Coast.

We also plan to participate in as many as ten races throughout the season, including the New York Liberty Challenge, the Kent Island Regatta, and races on the West Coast and in Hawaii. Our race committee is committed to both racing competitively and exposing members to the race experience, often sending several crews to each race.

Philadelphia Outrigger welcomes all paddlers of any skill level to join us on the water. We practice weekly in-season on the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers, as well as at the Jersey shore. For more information, contact us.
